HealthierUS School Challenge: Smarter Lunchrooms
USDA's HealthierUS School Challenge: Smarter Lunchrooms (HUSSC: SL), is a voluntary certification initiative that recognizes Team Nutrition schools that have met Federal nutrition standards for food and beverage choices, nutrition education efforts, and physical education and opportunities for physical activity for students.

  • The HealthierUS School Challenge: Smarter Lunchrooms (HUSSC: SL) is a key component of the national Let's Move Campaign to end childhood obesity within a generation.
  • HUSSC: SL is open to all schools participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP).
  • New criteria for HUSSC: SL will be announced and implemented on August 31, 2014.

What's New:

  • Schools are required to utilize the Smarter Lunchroom Self-Assessment Score Card to indicate the number of Smarter Lunchroom techniques that are being actively implemented in the school.
  • Smart Snacks criteria replaces what was formerly known as the Competitive Foods criteria.
  • Team Nutrition curricula and resources must be used in nutrition education efforts in elementary and middle school.
  • The Other Criteria for Excellence category includes some new options, such as promoting the use of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), offering classes for students and families focused on healthy cooking techniques, meeting Professional Standards proposed rule requirements, and joining the U.S. Food Waste Challenge.
