Empowered Parents for School Wellness

The 1 ½ hour workshop will empower parents to support school meals and lead change for school wellness. The school Food Service Director can “team up” to lead the workshop with a local Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), dietetic student, school nurse, health teacher, etc. Workshop materials include a leader guide, handouts, fact sheets, table tent awards, and myth and fact quiz.

Electronic Health Messages

Iowa Department of Education.

The students of Muscatine East Campus and Middle School developed a series of electronic messages to be utilized on televisions and monitors in cafeterias and throughout the school building. The messages have been added to a library of already developed messages and have been promoted to schools across the state as a nutrition education tool.

Smarter Lunchrooms: Ohio Project Summary 2013-2014 (PDF | 2.8 MB)

Goal one of the Smarter Lunchroom Project recruited partnerships with six Ohio universities to assist in the implementation of Smarter Lunchroom strategies and provide training developed by the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs. Goal two of the project collected evidence of effective Smarter Lunchroom strategies to assist with future trainings. Ohio’s Smarter Lunchroom Project began in January 2013 and was coordinated by the Ohio Department of Education – Office for Child Nutrition.


Iowa Recess Before Lunch

Pilot programs were conducted in 3 Iowa elementary schools. Results per school building and a guide to assist schools in making the determination of moving recess before lunch are available.

Chef Designed School Meals

Idaho State Department of Education, Child Nutrition Programs.

A two week cycle of school meals designed by a chef and dietitian and tested and approved by Idaho students. The menus have been planned to meet the new USDA Meal Pattern and use three to ten USDA Foods in each meal.


Iowa Gold Star Cycle Menus

Breakfast and lunch cycle menus that meet the current USDA requirements and feature USDA foods. Includes a 2-week breakfast cycle menu, 1 week Grab ‘n Go breakfast menu, and 5-week lunch menu, as well as recipes, nutrient analyses, and other tools.
